THE BANDS
Although the media officiously crowned him ‘Holland’s Most Unknown Popstar’ after the release of his latest album ‘Kelderkoorts’ this year, this singer/ keyboardist has been a cult-hero for many, including us, ever since his first recordings (released on the omnipresent Oetstar Rekkers). Expect distinctively wayward songs, abundant with brilliant observations, melody and wit, accompanied by Talma’s singular vocals. The Sound of Young Surhuisterveen since 1995.

Arnold de Boer is the hardest working man in Dutch underground. His band Zea started as as a 4-piece band in 1996, and has (amongst other things) toured intensively, released albums of diverse and brain frying material, organized events and generally been an all round good vibe. Since 2008, de Boer has gone under the moniker of Zea, sometimes in a capricious and obstinate manner. Be warned, it's energetic stuff. Armed with guitar, mic, drum machines, sampler and synths he puts the rock-‘n-roll into electronica and vice versa. And still he’s touring intensively, releasing albums, organizing events AND puts out brilliant records through his Makkum Records.

“…and 99% of what passes for rock-‘n-roll these days, silence is more compelling.” Luckily there are still bands like Suit and Tie Johns. Fuzzy, psychedelic rock-‘n-roll brought to you by three musicians that have the courage to be drunken buffoons. This year they’ve brought down roofs at the right places, at the right time. They self-released their debut album ‘PAUL’ on vinyl and are currently following the yellow brick road from Nijmegen to your local underground venue.

Combining melodic indiepop with glorious harmonies, this Amsterdam outfit drive their DeLorean through time, space and different scenes. The mighty Jan Schenk -who recorded their forthcoming LP ‘Reclining Nude’- heard The Feelies; others refer to the Dunedin sound. “They were charmingly naive and I taught them some worldly things”, said Ian Svenonius in 2012. Who are we to judge?

This band has been making a name for themselves for a few years.
Their last EP- ‘Hit it’ came out in November 2012. Shortly afterwards they went on a short hiatus to return with a new drummer. They play exiting and rousing noiserock with groovy rhythms. The last time we saw them they added Raul (of the late, great Wooden Constructions) to their line-up, which will most probably add even more jalapeno to their salsa.

The lo-fi loserpop all-stars from Nijmegen. Their captain and front man Roy Santiago (around 6 ft 5") might need a helmet for this performance, but who cares. Their 4 song- ‘Doo It Yourself’ 7” came out this year and we’re still jumping through hoops (like Sonic the Hedgehog) because of it. And their gig at Incubate this year was none other than sensational. Burn your Dire Straits records! Burn your Dire Straits records! Burn your Dire Straits records!

Currently taking a break from their ongoing worldwide endeavours, The Krontjong Devils have been the figureheads of Surf City Groningen (Lola Da Musica, 1995) for more than 20 years. Inspired by The Tielman Brothers and Dick Dale, the band has actively participated in spreading that good ol' surf-virus on a global scale. They released on Hillsdale and Telstar Records and toured in the USA, Japan and Gaasterland. Their debut 7” ‘Mooving with The Krontjong Devils’ came out in 1994 on the now legendary Kogar Records.

While we were under the impression that her band was called Easter Parade, songwriter/ violinist Susanne Linssen changed the name of her new band to Beginners and didn't tell us. A somewhat misleading name, since she was already doing Peel sessions (with Seedling back in 2001), when most of us were still watching Heartbreak High. Obviously we know her best from the Hospital Bombers, who at one point were basically house band in O’ceallaigh's. Beginners play catchy indiepop tunes; most of which have been recorded on an album; one that is out pretty soon. An album loaded with the sound of violin(s); but of course.

Hailing from the fertile neighbourhood of Kanaleneiland in Utrecht, Amber Arcades is the brainchild of Annelotte de Graaf (Oh, Brave Wide Eyes). Initially started as a vehicle for de Graaf's own songs, the band's s/t debut-EP turned many heads in the scene, including ours. They make compelling tunes with dreamy "Sandovalesque" vocals, loads of harmony and plenty of noisy guitars. The last time they were in town they got the wrong impression of Broningen hospitality, so we planned a group-hug for this occasion.
Let’s do this.

Four clean-cut Amsterdam boys that play infectious pop songs faster than their own shadow. Or maybe the songs are just short and to the point. Their music can be slightly annoying and cheeky sometimes, and they seem to radiate the worldview of Holden Caulfield most of the time. They’ve just made a new album called ‘Hard Feelings’ that features 11 songs, lasting all of 19 minutes. Their last EP was called ‘Ununbreak My Heart’. You get the point.

Hunter Complex is the moniker of Lars Meijer. Since his 2nd album ‘Heat’ came out in September 2013, we’ve been completely Airwolfing out to the brilliant blend of analog and digital synths, 80s new wave and television theme-song nostalgia. And we’re not alone; there’s been some well-deserved international recognition for this Narrominded-release. Crockett, Tubbs & MacGyver bought the vinyl too.

There aren’t that many bands that live up to the two biggest hits of Alphaville. Although I’m not certain if they are actually ‘big’ there. Probably more ‘respected’. This band hardly needs an introduction. Instead of following any given paths, they more or less paved numerous cross-border roads themselves, added some brilliant detours and run up down them whilst still carrying their own instruments. For more than 30 years.

It’s been a good year for Nouveau Vélo. Their latest EP ‘Daze’ was almost unanimously praised and they brought their jangly and brilliant ‘healing pop’ to several festivals and venues around the country. They sound more confident than ever. Songs as impregnable as the Watusi longhorns in the Helmond zoo. Always moving at their own pace, taking their time to create and to focus on what is important to them. We heard that they've bought a 16 track analog tape recorder. This is good news.
